Built in 1899 by Danish immigrant Tom Nelson ("You are a stranger here but once!"), Nelsen's has housed the tavern, a movie theater, a dentist's office, a pharmacy, and an ice cream parlor. We're adjacent to Historic Nelsen's Hall, home of the world-famous "Bitters Club", listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Bitter End Motel built adjacent to Nelsen's in 1995, the Bitter End Motel offers 6 beautifully-appointed rooms. Each with two full-sized beds, Private baths, with tub/shower, Separate dressing vanities, Air conditioning, electric heat, Refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, Color TV. Our historical restored log cabin, relocated on Washington Island, has been reconstructed into our guest cabin. The interior wood walls are from Island trees. The trees have been hand cut, rough sawn, and milled so you can enjoy the natural beauty found here on the island.
